Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. (July 27, 2011) — Naval Base Coronado celebrated during a safety presentation on base, for earning the Secretary of the Navy Safety Excellence Award for achievement in safety ashore in the non-industrial category, July 25.
“The award comes as a result of a safety-focused culture, which practices “safety first” in all processes, said Gwenervere Ray, NBC Safety and Occupational Health Installation Program Director. ” The remarkable success is a result of the command sustaining diligent dedication toward achieving zero mishaps via communication, analysis, documentation, training and education, and command-wide engagement.”
It was also due to the continuation of a three-year significant reduction in civilian work-related injuries and zero mishaps involving two-wheel motor vehicles and four-wheel recreational vehicles, Ray added.
The official ceremony took place at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., July 7, which recognized Navy and Marine Corps commands, activities and units that demonstrated unparalleled safety achievements.
“Naval Base Coronado’s personnel take pride and ownership in the Installation’s safety program,” said Capt. Yancy Lindsey, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Coronado. “Many take initiative to make recommendations for improvement in areas that directly affect their safety. Improvements in base traffic flow and increased visibility of pedestrians in crosswalks have resulted from Sailor and civilian efforts to mitigate hazards.”
In addition, the command experienced zero DUI’s for 365 days during the period January 2010 through January 2011, as a result of personal responsibility and liability by command personnel.
“Our overall strategy also includes partnering with community agencies, one being the Coronado Police Department, said Ray. “During quarterly safety stand-downs, subject matter experts from the department provide the most current statistics and training, in regard to motorcycle and ATV safety. Cooperatives with community agencies are especially helpful in bringing safety awareness to our personnel and keeping them accident-free.”
The Naval Base Coronado Safety Team is committed to ensuring that NBC sailors and civilian personnel remain safe. This is done by marketing the safety program through quarterly stand-downs, committee meetings, newsletters and training.
“I’m honored to direct a great team and to have the support of NBC leadership and command personnel,” said Ray. “We will continue to strive for mishap reduction, process improvement and safety excellence!”
