Explore a Galaxy of CoSA Digital Media Artwork

(February 2012) Ever wondered just how graphic designers airbrush a photo? Or how a video gets from film to screen? What about how cartoons are made in today’s digital age? Students in the Digital Media program at Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) do all of these things and more every day at school, and they will show you how at the CoSA Digital Media Expo on Tuesday, February 21. The event runs from 6 – 8 p.m. and will be presented in a true expo style, with exhibits and booths to explore at your leisure. The theme of the Expo is “Galaxy Gallery,” and each exhibit will orbit around that theme.

CoSA’s popular Digital Media program offers three programs of study, called “strands” – visual communication, in which students study imagery, typography, graphic arts, web design, and photography; digital filmmaking, in which students are immersed in the filmmaking process from concept to screenwriting to production; and animation, in which students study drawing, software manipulation, character and story development, and production of an animated story.

Each booth, or “space station,” at the event will feature a different aspect of what students create and produce in these three areas of study. Adding to the visual interest will be outerspace-themed projections against the walls.

In addition to observing strand-specific student work, attendees will also have the opportunity to try out these digital media tools for themselves at the interactive software booth. Learn how students use specific software programs to create intricate art and motion, and try it out for yourself!

Seniors in the Digital Media program will each have their own booth, in which they will show either reels of film or animations compiled over their four years at CoSA, or portfolios of the photography and graphic design they have worked on over the years. And you can’t miss the senior group installation called “The Tunnel,” which, with black lights and glow tape, will get you in the spirit of space exploration.

Bring the whole family and prepare to plug in and find out what digital media is! The Expo starts at 6 p.m. in the Coronado Performing Arts Center (CPAC) Black Box, located on the campus of Coronado High School at 650 D Avenue, Coronado, CA. Call 619.522.4050 x5 with questions. Patrons are invited to drop by any time between 6 and 8 p.m.

This event is pay-what-you-can and open to the public. Children are welcome. $5 suggested donation.
