Tennis: CHS Boys Win Against Point Loma and Francis Parker

On Tuesday, April 9, the Islander Boys’ Varsity Tennis team played against Point Loma High School at the Peninsula Tennis Club for a complete shutout. The singles lineup for Coronado gave up a total of ten games in nine sets. Senior Ryan Wood (Line 1) won three easy sets against Point Loma’s lineup (6-1, 6-2, and 6-2). Sophomore Jorge Yañez “bageled” (6-0) two of his sets against their Line 2 and 3 players and took the third set 6-2. At Line 3, sophomore Isaac Del Rincon won his sets similarly: 6-3, 6-2, and a “bagel.”

Coronado’s doubles teams likewise won all of their sets. Line 1 Doubles team, Jake Lamb/Andres de la Lama, “bageled” nearly all three of their sets (6-0, 6-0, and 6-1). For the first time this season, Nathaniel Nelson/Mauricio Rivero played together at Line 2 Doubles and played an unbelievable match. After being down 0-3 in their first, Nelson/Rivero came back to win the set 6-3 and finished the match with two “bagels.” At Line 3, Chris Fisher/Alan Corrales won their first two sets, 7-5 and 6-4; sophomore Nicolas Rios then subbed in for Corrales to win their last set 6-1. The Islanders were victorious, 18-0, for the first time this season against Point Loma.

The following Wednesday, Coronado faced Francis Parker to take another solid win. The singles lineup nearly swept, winning eight out of nine sets. Moving up to Line 1, Yañez “bageled” two easy sets and won his last set 6-1. Del Rincon (Line 2) mirrored these results. At Line 3 Singles, Rios started and ended his match strong with two 6-2 wins, dropping his second set 6-2 against Parker’s Line 2 player.

Now that the Islanders took a commanding lead, their doubles teams were able to play more relaxed. Lamb/de la Lama (Line 1) played a tough first set, as both teams went back and forth. After being down 4-5, Lamb/de la Lama pull through with three straight games to win the set 7-5. Unfortunately, they dropped their following two sets against Parker’s Line 2 and 3 teams, 6-2 and 6-3, respectively. At Line 2, Santiago Gonzalez/Wood won their first two sets handily (6-3 and 6-2), but fought a very tough last set. Going to a tiebreaker at 6-6, Gonzalez/Wood almost came back from a 3-6 deficit, losing the tiebreaker 5-7. After tallying up the sets, the Islanders defeated Parker, 11-7.

To conclude their week, the team traveled to La Jolla High School to play them for the second time this season. When Coronado had previously played them at home, the Islanders suffered a 2-16 loss. Although Coronado was not able pull through with a win this time either, they gave a solid effort against a very tough team. Yañez again played at Line 1 Singles to win all three of his sets easily: 6-2, 6-0, and 6-0. In doubles, Lamb/de la Lama (Line 1) dropped their first set 0-6 against La Jolla’s Line 1 team, but won the following two. Their second set proved an easy 6-2 victory. After being down 3-4, Lamb/de la Lama had to rally to win their last set. They went to 4-5 and won three straight games to close the set, 7-5. At Line 2, Gonzalez/Wood similarly won two out of three sets (6-4 and 6-2). Unfortunately, the Islanders fell short 7-11 against the Vikings.

The tennis team’s current season record is five wins to nine losses.
