This past week, the Girls’ Varsity Tennis team played two Western League matches against Cathedral Catholic and La Jolla High Schools. The Islanders hosted Cathedral on Tuesday to play them for the second time this season, as they previously dominated them 15-3. Now playing at home, the varsity team did not give up a single set to win the match 18-0. “Interestingly enough, Coronado only allowed 8 games in 6 sets versus Cathedral’s singles players and the same amount of games in the 9 doubles sets,” comments Coach Rob Moore.

On Thursday, the team traveled to La Jolla High School for another strong win against the Vikings. Last month, the Line 1 Doubles team for the Vikings had defeated all three of Coronado’s doubles teams. This week, Alejandra Gonzalez/Marla Steel (Line 1) avenged their previous loss, 6-3. Olivia Strong/Sinaia Haskal (Line 2) lost to this same team in a close set, 4-6. Jolee Barr and Tiana French subbed in to play La Jolla’s line 1 and lost their match. Ellie Johnson/Samantha Russell (line 3) took two strong wins against the Vikings’ Line 2 and Line 3 Doubles teams, 6-2 and 6-0.

On the singles side, Summer Vu (Line 1) won all three sets, 6-0, while Elsa Östermarker gave up only one game against these same three players. “Particularly noteworthy was the determined play of freshman Ana de la Lama who won against the Line 3 Singles player, 7-5, and the Line 2 player in a tiebreaker 7-6 (6),” shares Coach Moore.

The varsity team’s current record is eleven win to two losses.

Upcoming Matches:
  • Tuesday, October 9 vs. Point Loma High School @ 3:30 PM (Home)
  • Thursday, October 11 vs. Scripps Ranch High School @ 3:30 (Home)
