Coronado’s boys’ varsity tennis team made it through this past week with two wins against two strong teams. St. Augustine High School players came to Coronado on Monday for the first time this season. In the singles lineup, Diego Yañez, Eric Katz, and Jorge Yañez each faced three challenging opponents but won five of their nine matches, giving them a small lead of 5-4. Coronado’s doubles teams sealed the win for Coronado, as Ryan Wood/Isaac del Rincon, Yannick Peterhans/Jake Lamb, and Santiago Gonzalez/Anibal Ramirez collectively won six of their nine matches. The final score against St. Augustine was 11-7.
On Tuesday, San Diego High School hosted the Islanders for another afternoon match. In last year’s match against San Diego, Wood/Gonzalez played a golden set, meaning that they did not drop a single point in the entire match. Not much had changed this year. Singles players Katz, Jorge Yañez, and Wood won seven of their nine sets, and Wood almost took a golden set again, having only dropped two points in his final match. On the doubles end, Coronado powered through their opponents with strong volleys and string-breaking serves. Gonzalez/del Rincon won their sets straight, as did Peterhans/Lamb and Ramirez/Andres de la Lama. The final score against San Diego High was 16-2.
