Dear CUSD Parents and Guardians:
National Walkout
This morning, at both CHS and CMS, we observed students exercising their First Amendment Rights by determining their own approach to the National Walkout. At CHS, some students chose to remain in class, some organized vigils and moments of silence on the quad, some wrote letters to legislators, and others marched purposefully off of campus and into the community. At CMS, a group of students assembled on the field and listened to peers’ statements on the need for safe schools and the role/voice of teenagers. At our elementary sites, teachers created and facilitated experiences designed to build community and foster kindness.
As I shared in my email to parents on Friday, research indicates that a comprehensive safety approach has the greatest impact on prevention, and that nurturing an inclusive school culture where all students feel supported, valued, and heard decreases school violence. While we have important work to do across our district to create physically and emotionally safe environments for learning, today we observed evidence that students felt freedom, respect, and support for acting and expressing themselves in ways which reflected their own individual views and perspectives.
P3
In partnership with the Coronado Police Department, and in response to feedback from our Community Safety Forum, we have entered into a collaboration with ‘StudentsSpeakingOut.org’ and will begin to publicize the ‘P3’ App. The P3 App is free and sends anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers which are forwarded on to the Coronado Police Department. Additional information regarding a CUSD student and community ‘roll out’ for P3 will be sent to students by the end of the week.
Student Forum on School Safety
CMS and CHS students will receive a ‘Safety Survey’ this Friday. Data collected from the survey will be used to structure our upcoming Student Forum.
CUSD Safety Committee
We are in the early stages of establishing a safety committee comprised of staff, parents, community leaders, and students. Additional information and an invitation to participate will be shared with parents by the end of the week.
Very Respectfully,
Karl Mueller
