Coronado High School Sailing Team Finishes Successful Season; Graduates Heading to Leading Universities

CORONADO, Calif., June 3, 2016 – The Coronado High School Sailing Team has completed its 2015-2016 season, placing 13th among 60 teams in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA).

Coronado’s co-ed sailing team has two dozen members in ninth through 12th grades and competes in five PCISA regattas and specialty events from the Bay area to Southern California and in monthly SoCal races. The team raced in PCISA regattas in Long Beach, Monterey, San Francisco and Santa Barbara.  The team placed third overall in the fall 2015 PCISA Girls Invitational.

Senior sailors and team captains Casey King, Katie Roughneen, Nicole Simon and Grace Yakutis helped lead the team, joined by team members Evan Agarwal, Evan Arnold, David (DJ) Austin, Alex Bastuba, Tanner Chapko, Charlie Clausen, Sean Crozier, PJ Eaton, Crew Fritsch, Tanner Jacobs-Bonnet, Carolyn Kearns, Kristopher Leslie, Erika Reiners, Tristan Richmond, Sam Roughneen, Owen Schafer, Amy Schafer, Joey Simon, Maxwell Stangl and Garrick Sutton.

The team wrapped its season with awards, honoring:

  • Nicole Simon: Top Gun Skipper
  • The Jimmer Best Crew: Tanner Chapko
  • Top Gun Silver Skipper: Alex Bastuba
  • Best Silver Crew: Erika Reiners
  • The Sam, sportsmanship and dedication: Garrick Sutton
  • Islander Cup: Grace Yakutis and Casey King

King will attend Washington State University this fall, while Katie Roughneen plans to attend Boston College, where she will sail for its team. Simon will head to the College of Charleston as part of that school’s sailing program, and Yakutis will be at the University of Southern California and will sail for USC.

Former members of Coronado High School sailing teams and current college sailors include 2016 Olympian and College of Charleston sailor Paris Henken; Chuck Eaton, University of Hawaii; Katie Dowling, College of Charleston; Sterling Henken, University of California Santa Barbara; Hans Henken, Stanford; and Esteban Forrer, Old Dominion University, among many others.

Rhode Island School of Design graduate and CHS team coach Kate Sheahan, who formerly assisted the Coronado team and previously was head sailing coach at Francis Parker, has a long and successful sailing career and continues to race around the world.

Following a national championship prep career, assistant coach and San Diego native Bryan Lake attended the University of Hawaii, where he was a three-time All American skipper and winner of a number of team and single-handed events. Lake is a world champion in kite boarding and competes in events globally.

Coronado Yacht Club hosts the team, which currently is fundraising to replace some of its FJ boats used in practice and regattas.  The Coronado Rotary and Optimist Clubs recently contributed, and there is an ongoing fundraising campaign. Tax deductible donations can be made via the Coronado Maritime Foundation (federal tax ID 33-084-5178) with a note that proceeds are to be directed to the CHSST for boat acquisition, c/o Coronado Yacht Club, CMF, 1631 Strand Way, Coronado, CA 92118.
