Highlights from City Manager’s Weekly Update: Boats Continue Washing Ashore

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Ride the Lights 2015:  The City hosted the third annual Ride the Lights event on Sunday, December 13. The event was a success, with approximately 350 riders turning out to enjoy a festive evening of holiday lights, cocoa, cookies, and caroling, courtesy of Coronado Middle School and Coronado School of the Arts students. Every member of the City’s Bicycle Advisory Committee worked the event and coordinated closely with the Police Department to help ensure safety. The Committee would like to thank the local organizations that sponsored the event. This video was created by resident Harold Myers and he asked that the City share it: https://vimeo.com/149057283

Senior CenterCouncil Goes with Spreckels:  The City Council named the facility that will replace the Coronado Senior Center the John D. Spreckels Center and Bowling Green. The existing Senior Center will be rebuilt, with work to begin early next year. A groundbreaking for the project is planned for January 12. The existing building will be replaced with a modern and more functional 9,000-square-foot building. A gift from the Frances G. Harpst Trust partly funded the project.

ferry landing restaurantRestaurant Pad at Ferry Landing:  The San Diego Unified Port District will consider at its meeting on January 12 a conceptual design of a new building shell, which will accommodate a new restaurant east of the Il Fornaio restaurant. The plan includes improvements and materials to be constructed to a future tenant’s specifications. (See renderings below.) The proposed enclosed area would cover 7,500 square feet, which is similar in size to Il Fornaio. The space is the last empty lot in the area and is designed for restaurant use. The Port’s commissioners will consider the design and whether to authorize environmental review at the meeting next month.

Manny GonzalezEmployee of the Quarter:  Jose “Manny” Gonzalez, a master mechanic in the Public Services Fleet Maintenance Division, has been selected as the recipient of the City’s Employee of the Quarter award for October to December 2015. Manny, who has worked for Coronado for nearly 12 years, was nominated for his excellent performance in managing the City’s Fleet Maintenance Division, which is responsible for 178 vehicles of various duties. He is well-regarded by his co-workers and those he has mentored over the years. He consistently goes above and beyond the call to duty in developing his own skills, such as becoming certified to perform needed repairs on Fire Department specialty apparatus, and those of his employees, fostering a team atmosphere for the two divisions he manages. Manny was recognized for his efforts on Thursday, December 17.

boat washed ashoreBoats Continue Washing AshoreLast weekend, a sailboat washed ashore on Navy property north of Silver Strand State Park, the latest in a series of vessels that have been pushed ashore by strong gusty winds. Last month, two sailboats washed up south of Central Beach and near the Hotel del Coronado due to storms and high winds. Both were removed, including one at the City’s cost. Lifeguards actively monitor the coast for derelict boats and are preparing for more storms with the forecasted El Niño this winter. Most of the beached sailboats come from the Zuniga Jetty free anchorage, an area that has been problematic for the City and Navy, both of which are ultimately responsible for removing boats that wash ashore. This can be a costly undertaking, especially if owners do not claim their property.
