United Through Reading will be honoring nearly 35-year Coronado resident Carol Raiter at their 7th Annual Storybook Ball at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa on the evening November 14, 2015.
United Through Reading is a San Diego-based nonprofit that unites U.S. military families who face physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together. In nearly 200 locations worldwide, United Through Reading offers military service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading childrens books to their children at home. The program creates emotional connections between service members and the children they read to, encourages early literacy skills, and makes homecomings easier on military families. Last year, with the help of more than 500 volunteers, United Through Reading served more than 100,000 beneficiaries and distributed more than 25,000 books to military children.
United Through Readings Storybook Ball exists today because in 2009 Carol Raiter jumped in head-first as event chair to create a truly magical event, the very first Storybook Ball gala celebrating the nonprofits 20th anniversary. Her vision for the event has enabled United Through Reading to tell their story, expand their network of support, and raise critically needed funds. Because of her unwavering support of United Through Readings mission, the Storybook Ball has raised more than $2 million dollars since 2009, which has enabled the organization to serve hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries. United Through Reading is pleased to be celebrating her contribution and service by presenting her with the Extraordinary Service Award on the occasion of United Through Readings 7th annual Storybook Ball.
