San Diego City Council declares the Month of September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in San Diego!
This morning (September 15, 2015) Proclamation was presented to Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego, non-profit based in Coronado, by Council President Sherri S. Lightner and Council Pro Tem Marti Emerald (photo). Both spoke eloquently of the continued need to increase awareness as there is no screening test for the early detection of ovarian cancer. Both also shared personal stories, Mari Emerald lost her Aunt to ovarian cancer and Sherri Lightner spoke of one of her staff’s relatives was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
In part the Proclamation states:
“WHEREAS since 2008 to-date, Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego (OCASD) has reached over 5,000 attendees at their education programs to medical and nursing students, civic groups and organizations throughout San Diego County, and
WHEREAS, Soroptimist International of Coronado awarded the “BEST FOR WOMEN GRANT 2015” to Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego for the expansion of the HEAR “If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now” Program to community groups and civic organizations, NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Council of the City of San Diego, that this Council, for and on behalf of the people of San Diego, in honor of those struggling with ovarian cancer and in support of local efforts to improve awareness, research and treatment, does hereby declare September 2015 to be “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of San Diego.”
