Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego awarded Best for Women Grant by Soroptimist International of Coronado
Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego is delighted to announce the Soroptimist International of Coronado (SIC) (www.coronadosoroptimist.org) awarded a Best for Women Grant to expand their community outreach program to civic groups and organizations! Soroptimist International of Coronado’s mission and target areas of concern are to support organizations who have a significant impact on the lives of women and girls either who are affected by domestic violence or human trafficking, and/or organizations who are working to improve access to education and health services for women and girls. OCA of San Diego will be acknowledged at CSI’s 12th Annual Luncheon on April 11, 2015 at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa.
The grant is to expand the HEAR: “If I Only Knew Then What I know Now” program to provide community outreach presentations to civic groups and organizations. This community outreach program consists of presentations of dedicated ovarian cancer survivors aimed at raising awareness about the signs, symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer. HEAR is also designed to inspire women to be aware of changes in their bodies and seek medical attention: an individual is the best advocate for their health issues. Peg Ford, Co-Founder/President, Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego, has been appointed as Advocate Representative on the Steering Committee of the newly formed Evidence-Based Research Network (EBRNetwork) where a group of Norwegian and Danish researchers initiated an international network to bring together initial partners from Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, the UK and USA and was established in Bergen, Norway in December 2014.
The mission of the EBRNetwork is to reduce waste in research by promotion: No new studies without prior systematic review of existing evidence and efficient production, updating and dissemination of systematic reviews.
The highly successful screening of the N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease) Movie on February 4, 2015 here in San Diego as well as 46 cities across the country and Canada, followed by the on-site discussion with the audience by our expert panel of Dr. Afshin Bahador, Gynecologic Oncologist, Cindy Silver, ovarian cancer survivor and Jill Curtiss, uterine cancer survivor had one of the largest audiences in the country!
The movie is being shown on PBS stations across the country: KBPS has it scheduled for April 10th at 10 p.m.; April 12th at 2 p.m.; May 15 at 10 p.m. and May 17th at 2 p.m. Please check KPBS listing to confirm dates and times.
