Coronado’s Popular Summer Shuttle Bus Starts Sunday

Coronado is promoting its popular Free Summer Shuttle program with a whimsically cool wrap that is sure to have everyone talking. Designed to capture the spirit of an iconic beach town and paid for by the Coronado Tourism Improvement District, the brightly colored wrap promises riders a playful crosstown voyage with many exciting stops along the way.

Now heading into its third season, the Shuttle service begins Sunday, June 7, and runs through September 13. The City Council agreed to fund the service to help get people out of their cars along the Orange Avenue business district during the peak summer season. This year, a third bus helps increase service frequency from 30- to 20-minute intervals. Riders will wait no longer than 20 minutes for a shuttle. Stops include the beach, Hotel del Coronado, Downtown/Shops, Coronado Ferry Landing and the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa.

The Summer Shuttle in Coronado is the Metropolitan Transit System’s highest performing route in terms of passengers carried per hour of operation. This is great news and a testament to the success of the service. Bus stop signs will be installed and promotional material, including a bus schedule, will be made available to local hotels and businesses, City facilities, including City Hall and the Library, and in each bus to promote the free shuttle. Riders are reminded that each bus begins and ends its round trip at the Coronado Shores, where there is a 20-minute layover. To avoid the layover, riders can cross Orange Avenue and pick up the next bus heading north toward the Coronado Ferry Landing.

Special bus tickets will be available to Cays residents for the Summer Concerts series on Sundays at Spreckels Park and the City’s planned Fourth of July events. See the Cays Homeowners Association Office for details. The service, which replaces the normal MTS 904 route, provides four more hours of daily 904 service by beginning one hour earlier and remaining in operation three hours later, seven days a week. Three Summer Shuttle buses will run every 20 minutes from 9:02 a.m. to 9:42 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 9:02 a.m. to 10:42 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
