Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Recycle Scavenging
The City Council introduced an ordinance at its May 5 meeting which addresses the issue of illicit scavenging from residential, public, and commercial trash and recycle bins, and from City streets and alleys. The City uses the funds it receives for the recyclable materials to help cover the costs of the curbside recycling program. If approved at a second reading of the ordinance set for May 19, the City will be able to issue a ticket to people caught searching through recycling or trash carts or otherwise “meddling” with the carts. The Council directed staff to exclude any language from the proposed ordinance that would prohibit the practice of giving away “free” household goods.
Coronado Named Best for Families with Kids
An Our City San Diego study places Coronado at the top of the list of best neighborhoods for families with small school-age children. Coronado scored 8.58 when grading 16 factors in five main categories: schools, crime and safety, access to youth facilities, moral cleanliness, and health. The City’s score was more than a full point higher than any of the other 16 neighborhoods that were highly recommended by the online magazine. Click here to read the article.
Barrier Netting Complete
Work on the 15th Tee Barrier Netting Project is complete. The netting is designed to deflect golf balls from entering Coronado Tennis Center courts and surrounding areas. The work was finished in six weeks, which included manufacturing the poles and installing the netting.
Bike Sculpture Refurbishment
The San Diego Unified Port District will soon remove the sculpture “My Bike” by Amos Robinson from Tidelands Park for refurbishment. The art piece was installed at the Port District park in 2009 and shows some wear from the elements. The artwork will be fully restored by the artist, who will remove the remaining paint, repaint it and replace bearings to ensure the wheels move smoothly. The work should be completed by the end of the year. It is set to be removed in the next two weeks. The piece, which is owned by the Port, was part of the Port’s Urban Trees program in 2008.
Parking Meter Update
The City will begin implementing a processing fee for credit card payments at the smart parking meters recently installed as a test. Currently, the credit card fees exceed the cost of one hour of parking. The City Council approved the processing fee this week, which will recover the costs charged by the meter vendor and the financial institutions that process credit card transactions. The City is testing the new smart meters with sensors that reset the time when someone leaves, prevents meter feeding and accepts credit card payments as a convenience to the community. The fee will be .35 cents. The meters will display the convenience fee and allow the user to accept or decline the transaction. The new transaction fee will direct the cost to those using the credit card service. The City will be replacing all of its old meters with the new smart meters in the fall.
Ferry Booth Restoration
The City Council approved this week a number of contracts for various projects around town. One of the projects is the restoration of the Coronado Ferry Ticket Booth, which was found to have dry rot and termite damage. The booth is at the original site of the Coronado Ferryboat Terminal. A plaque marks the historic nature of the area and ferry service, which ended when the San Diego-Coronado Bridge was built. The ticket booth will be painted and generally spruced up. The work may begin as early as the fall.
Bike Theft Suspect Arrested
A 53-year-old San Diego resident was arrested Monday, May 4, suspected in the theft of the Police Department’s remotely monitored bicycle. The communications center received notification around 7:15 p.m. that the bicycle was traveling northbound on Orange Avenue when officers recognized the bicycle in a rack on the front of a Metropolitan Transit System bus. Officers followed the bus to Third Street and Alameda Boulevard, where they made contact with the bus driver who then identified the man as the person who loaded the bicycle onto the rack. He was also found to be in possession of other stolen property reported earlier in Coronado as well as stolen property related to a San Diego Police Department case. He was transported to county jail.
