Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: City Council to consider environmental aspect of South Beach restroom

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Free Summer Shuttle Service to Return

On Tuesday, March 3, the City Council agreed to reauthorize the popular Free Summer Shuttle Bus service for 2015. The buses will run from June 7 through September 13. The service frequency will be increased from 30-minute intervals to 20-minute intervals, insuring riders wait no longer than 20 minutes at any time for a shuttle. The Council also directed staff to determine ways the City can provide free bus service to the Cays for the Fourth of July holiday and summer concerts, and to bring the matter back for future Council consideration.

South Beach Restroom Project

The need for a new public restroom at South Beach has been discussed for several years by the City Council. At its meeting on Tuesday, March 17, the City Council will consider the environmental initial study documents prepared for the South Beach Restroom project. At the public hearing, the Council will receive public comment and determine whether the project description is complete. It also will determine the type of environmental review that should be conducted. The draft initial environmental study can be viewed at the Coronado Public Library, the Community Development Department or on the City’s website at current projects. A public notice of the hearing has been posted on the City’s website.

Navy Recycled Water Plant Feasibility Study

A kick-off meeting was recently held with RBF Consulting and representatives from the Navy and the City to investigate the feasibility of building a treatment plant to provide recycled water. The recycled water would be used to irrigate both the municipal golf course and the Sea and Air Course on Naval Air Station North Island, along with parks and other areas that are currently using potable water. This study is timely, considering the drought conditions that are plaguing the region and the ever-increasing cost of potable water.

Major Event: SuperSEAL Triathalon

The ninth annual SuperSEAL and SEAL Sprint race event will be held Sunday, March 15, along State Route 75. Event organizers expect up to 1,000 participants. The SuperSEAL is a swim-bike-run event that covers a course consisting of a two-lap, 1.2-mile open ocean swim; a four-lap, 56-mile bike course; and a five-lap, 13.1-mile run. It is considered one of the toughest medium-distance triathlons around. The open-ocean swim starts at 7 a.m. SR 75 will be open to vehicle traffic. However, some lanes will be closed until approximately noon. The Bayshore Bikeway will be closed in the morning. Notifications have been sent to affected businesses and advanced traffic notices were placed at certain intersections. The City thanks the community for its support for this event.

Junior Lifeguards Important Dates

Swim test dates for Coronado Junior Lifeguards 2015 and Coronado Surf Awareness 2015 are coming up. There will be two sessions, June 22-July 17 and July 20-August 14. Registration for residents begins April 21. There also will be an introductory Junior Lifeguards program held from June 15-19. Coronado Lifeguards will then host the California State Games Junior Lifeguard Competition at Central Beach. Here’s the schedule: http://bit.ly/1AQzLQ1. The first of six test dates is April 18 so mark your calendars.

Public Services Work Updates

City crews worked on a number of projects around the City. These are the most recent:

  • The City will have a partial repair completed of the swings at South Cays Park by tomorrow. Crews are still waiting on additional swings and parts to complete the repairs. However, two swings will be available for use tomorrow. The old seats were removed due to damage around the edges where the rings are attached to the chains. The steel edges of the seats curled up near the chains, compromising their safety. The City had removed the seats and returned them but received the wrong seats. Signs explaining the work remain up until complete repairs are made.
  • The Portable Restroom facility has been moved to the Avenida del Sol street-end location. The facility was at Central Beach, awaiting its use during construction on the restrooms there. However, that project has been delayed. The City is working to reconnect the portable restroom. It is on the Public Services schedule to be installed by tomorrow.
  • After a brief delay due to rain earlier this week, the sod arrived for Spreckels Park. Parks crews placed about 6,000 square feet of sod within an area of the park near Sixth Street and C Avenue that receives high use. Most of the sod was placed within a few hours using a crew of about 10 people. This area is currently taped off and will remain closed until the week of April 13, the same week as the annual Coronado Flower Show, until it has firmly established.
