Brigadier General James W. Bierman, Jr.
Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region
Brigadier General James W. Bierman, Jr., will serve as the 4th of July Parade Grand Marshall this year. Brigadier General Bierman was born in Camp Lejeune, NC. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, and subsequently completed The Basic School and Infantry Officer’s Course. His assignments have included: Commanding Officer, Headquarters and Service Company, 2d Battalion, 8th Marines; Commanding Officer, Company C and Battalion Operations Officer, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment; Commanding Officer, Recruiting Station Richmond, VA; Action Officer during Phase IV of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Al Hillah, Iraq; Deputy G-3, Future Operations Officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom II in Fallujah, Iraq; Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment, during Operation Enduring Freedom VI-VII in eastern Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.1. in Haditha, Iraq; and Military Secretary to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. In July 2013, Brigadier General Bierman assumed command of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region.
Brigadier General Bierman’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with gold star; the Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device and two gold stars; the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars; the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star; and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star.
Brigadier General Bierman is accompanied in this year’s parade by his wife, Beth, and their three children, Alaina, Maelyn and Samuel.
