On Saturday, December 21 about 11:00 am, a 10 year-old bicyclist was struck by
a car in the 1000 block of 10th Street. The young cyclist was playing with a friend and
rode from an alleyway on to the 1000 block of 10th Street without checking for cross
traffic. A 2007 Chevy driven by a 23 year-old man was travelling about 25 miles per
hour East on 10th Street. The driver of the car did not have time to brake or make an
evasive maneuver to avoid the bicyclist.
At impact, the child rolled onto the hood of the car and struck his head on the
windshield, shattering the glass. The cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the
collision, saving him from a traumatic head injury. The child was transported to the
hospital with only minor cuts and scrapes.
The relative absence of serious injury resulting from this collision is a clear
lesson about the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle.
