CMS Holds Annual Spelling Bee – Grace Weisbrod Wins After Spelling…

Seventh Grader Wins CMS Spelling Bee – Winning Word: E-X-O-N-E-R-A-T-E

The annual Coronado Middle School spelling bee was organized by Ms. Kathy MacDonald, also affectionately known as “The Queen Bee” and held Thursday, February 2, 2012. Each Humanities class, a combination of Language Arts and History, held its own classroom spelling bee. The winner from each classroom, grades 6-8, qualified for the school wide spelling bee. There were forty five total participants. Granzer Hall was filled with parents, siblings and friends of the competitors.

Vice Principal Karin Mellina read the words to the participants. Principal Jay Marquand, past librarian Susan Schelkun and current librarian Connie LeFevre acted as the judging panel, while Ms. MacDonald oversaw the entire event and offered hugs of congratulations and a certificate to each student as she or he exited the competition.

The bee started with words like “flock”, “broth”, and “title” and got progressively more difficult with each round. The sixth round, in particular, saw ten students mispell words like “facade”, “resuscitable” and “linguistically.”

Seventh grader Grace Weisbrod outlasted the competition and won the bee by spelling “exonerate”. Congratulations to Grace and all the participants for a job well done.
