Coronado Boasts Two of Seven San Diego Icons

San Diego, home of the majestic California Tower in Balboa Park, Hotel del Coronado across the bay, and spaceship-like Geisel Library at UC San Diego, is considering a new urban icon — the 500-foot-high “Wings of Freedom sculpture on Navy Pier at the city’s North Embarcadero.

The San Diego Unified Port District is hosting a series of town halls, run by the USS Midway Museum which is proposing a $68 million pier plan that includes the pair of sail-like steel-and-titanium wings.

The next session will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6 at port headquarters, 3165 Pacific Highway in downtown San Diego. The third and final session will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, also at the port building. The port board plans to consider approval of the pier and sculpture at its Jan. 10 meeting.

To get you in the mood, we offer a four-part seminar on icons. Today — Saturday, Dec. 3 — is the final installment.

We began with icons of the world, like the pyramids, then of the U.S. outside California, like the U.S. Capitol, then California outside San Diego, like Disneyland’s castle, and finally, San Diego’s, from the Mission San Diego Alcala to the Salk Institute.
