Coronado Power Outage Expected To End at Dusk

Coronado, CA (October 17, 2011)

Coronado residents who have been without electricity since about 11 p.m. Sunday, should expect their power to be restored by 6 p.m., officials with SDG&E said Monday.

More than 400 customers, most of them in the Coronado Cays, remained without power as of noon Monday. The outage also affected some residents in the Coronado Shores condominium complex on Strand Way.

SDG&E spokeswoman Allison Zaragoza said the cause of the power outage has not been determined. However, to restore power, repair crews must replace nearly 900 feet of underground cable. She said another 250 customers will lose power temporarily while crews work on the cable.

Power was down for up to 2,000 customers in various parts of Coronado initially late Sunday but much of it was restored immediately.

While the power is out, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise keeping the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to keep food cold for longer.

If the power is out for longer than 2 hours, follow the guidelines below:
•For the freezer section: A freezer that is half full will hold food safely for up to 24 hours. A full freezer will hold food safely for 48 hours. Do not open the freezer door if you can avoid it.
•For the refrigerated section: Pack milk, other dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, gravy, and spoilable leftovers into a cooler surrounded by ice. Inexpensive Styrofoam coolers are fine for this purpose.
•Use a food thermometer to check the temperature of your food right before you cook or eat it. Throw away any food that has a temperature of more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
