Cabrillo Lands Again

On Sunday, October 2, 2011, Joao Rodrigues Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for the King of Spain once again landed to claim San Diego, this time at Naval Base Point Loma. But he was a re-enactor for the annual Cabrillo festival.

Mercy Tangredi tries on helmet.
He was rowed by sailors in red caps. He looked: serious, very hot in his armor and tough when he came ashore. He put two flags from his helpers and a cross from his pastor in the sand. U.S. Navy sailors then put out the flags and played the national anthems of Mexico, Portugal, Spain, and the United States of America. They also put out the Indians of San Diego flag but the Indians did not have an anthem. However, they did Indian dances. There were also Portuguese
and Spanish dances.
There were Portuguese, Spanish and Indian foods to eat. The re-enactors let people try on helmets, as well as old dresses for the girls. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Hopefully they will do it all again next year. You should go if you did not this year.
