Inspirational Speakers Motivate CHS Tennis Team

The Coronado High School tennis teams were treated to a visit by two inspirational speakers this last week. Lesley Paterson spoke to the girls about having passion for their sport. She shared about the importance of enjoying training while simultaneously leaving it all on the court. As a former World Champion Triathlon runner up in 2009 and 2010, Scottish National Triathlon Champion, and rugby player, Paterson is definitely an inspiration for any athlete.

“It was motivating how passionate she was about what she was doing,” commented Mary Mulvey, a Varsity captain. She continued, “It helps you look at all the activities you’re involved in and whether you are doing them for the right reason.”

Laurie Chapman was the second speaker and gave a presentation about mental fitness in an athlete and the power of visualization. She gave the 36 members of the Varsity, Junior Varsity Green, and Junior Varsity White teams practical exercises that they could immediately implement to their current performances. “You could use the visualization techniques for acing a serve. It helps you stay positive,” said Mulvey.

As a graduate from UCLA, Chapman was an All-American track and cross-country runner. After finishing school she continued her running through Santa Monica and San Diego track clubs. Presently, she is working in Coronado as a therapist and clinical director.
