Summer is almost over, but don’t pack away your beach gear just yet! URT Clothing is putting on their 2nd Annual URT WOMP, “a bodysurfing event.” The friendly competition will take place at Coronado’s premier bodysurfing break, Outlets in North Beach, located right next to dog beach. From 9AM to high noon on August 21st on-lookers will be treated to coffee, snacks, a packed raffle, great goody bags, and amazing trophies handcrafted by local beach lifeguard Damon Bassett, oh and not to mention there will be an incredible display of the human torpedo.
Although Coronado is not known for their great surfing breaks and perfectly sculpted waves, it is known for its raw power and energy. When a large SW swell hits Coronado’s North Beach the ocean puts on a display. Walls of water come tearing through to break in one simultaneous heap. It is from this heavy wall of water that the name URT WOMP is derived. Bodysurfing conditions like this is simply called Body-WOMPing, because of the laundry machine like thrashing one will take when the wave walls up and breaks.
This year URT will be having 3 possible divisions for entrants to take advantage of. A sqURT division (14 and Under), Open division (15 and UP), and a hand plain division. You can sign up on URT Clothing’s site (www.URTURT.com) or one can sign up on the day of the event for an extra fee.
URT Clothing is a local Coronado company started by two local beach lifeguards, Dougie Mann and Ian Urtnwoski. BodyWOMPing large surf is a strongly encouraged activity to do while on break as a beach lifeguard. Being comfortable in heavy surf is critical to keeping a beach safe. It is an activity that has become widely practiced within the lifeguard agency and local community.
Bring your fins, trunks, beach loving dog, and come out to Outlets for a great time and atmosphere and take part in the URT WOMP as a contestant or as an onlooker from a safe distance.
