Work on San Diego-Coronado Bridge Complete

Caltrans officials have completed work to replace the Movable Concrete Barrier atop the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, ending overnight lane and ramp closures that initially had backed up traffic in town. Despite pushing back the start time on the nightly work following complaints from residents, Caltrans finished the work to swap out concrete sections earlier than anticipated. The old concrete sections are now stacked near the toll station and are being returned to the manufacturer to be recycled, according to Caltrans spokesman Hayden Manning. Some sections already have been returned. That work is not expected to require any lane closures. The old machines also will be returned to the manufacturer. The concrete barrier was last replaced in 1993. Two machines had moved the barrier four times per weekday, and on weekends during special events. One new machine now moves the barrier.
