Glorietta Bay Park: Site of 24-Hour Relay for Life Event

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is expected to bring hundreds of participants and spectators this weekend to Coronado’s Glorietta Bay Park for a 24-hour fundraising event. Beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, teams of people will take turns walking or running around a path at the park. The event ends at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The Coronado Relay for Life began in 1999. It has been held at Glorietta Bay Park since last year, when it outgrew its previous location. The largest crowds will be in and around the park at the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and at 8:30 p.m. for a special event honoring those who have battled cancer. Both events are set for Saturday. The Coronado City Council agreed in April to waive the curfew at the park, which is between the Glorietta Bay Boat Ramp parking lot and the north fence of the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. According to the American Cancer Society, relays are 24 hours long to represent “the reality that cancer never sleeps.” Participants honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease and raise money to help fight cancer in their communities.
