On 19 July 1918, during World War I, USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6) was sunk off Fire Island, New York, by German submarine U-156. The cruiser sank in 28 minutes with the loss of 6 lives and was the only major warship lost by the United States in World War I. Note, she was originally commissioned as USS California in August 1907 and was renamed in September 1914 due to the name California assigned to BB-44.
