We didn’t win anything this year at MotorCars on MainStreet. We never do. But the anticipation, the sound of all those old engines, the excitement … well, a guy can dream, can’t he? We hoped to be a candidate for the Mayor’s Choice Award. But his tastes traveled down a different road this year. So, in the end, we didn’t win an award, but we won the hearts of an awful lot of people. Perhaps if they had a category for “Most Driven Model T” we would have a chance (smile). In mild frustration, we submit this poem and the moral of the day: “No sense in crying over spilt antifreeze.”
“EPILOGUE TO THE CAR SHOW”
Olive Oyl, the little green truck, who else could it be?
That’s the 1924, Coronado Brewing Company’s “C-Cab” Model T.
She’s never won an award. Never garnered a race.
But the perky Tin Lizzie has certainly made her case.
Old and little, her hand-cranked engine’s still on the go.
She’ll do 100 miles a week, but top speed is still “just plain SLOW.”
Heartwarming, photogenic, she’s gently aging in her years.
Lovable and unforgettable, she’s outlasted nearly all of her peers.
She was rusty, noisy, mostly unremarkable in her day.
Dawn-to-dusk, dutifully hauling her load of Colorado horses and hay.
So this year we failed again to win Mayor’s Choice or First Place,
Yet, at the end of the day, Olive putters away, a vision of elegance and grace.
Today her mission is ice-cold beer, and a truckload of rousing good cheer.
“Awooga, Awooga” goes her horn and you know Olive Oyl is near.
Still noisy, still puttering and reeking of gas, she’s an icon on Coronado Isle.
Like the beer she touts, little green Olive has become part of our lifestyle.
Contests aside and wherever we go, this truck from the past draws a special crowd.
Just remember, Olive Oyl’s her name, sing it long, sing it loud.
