2010 Census Mistakenly Placed Nearly 6,000 Residents in San Diego vs. Coronado

The Census Bureau incorrectly placed 5,785 military personal as San Diego residents instead of Coronado.

In a previous story, we reported that Coronado’s total was 18,912 in 2010 which represented a 21.5% drop from the 2000 total of 24,100. Therefore, the revised total for Coronado’s population is 24,697.

According to the Voice of San Diego:

The mistake occurred because of an error that assigned people on three aircraft carriers — the USS Nimitz, the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Ronald Reagan — to San Diego instead of Coronado, the ships’ official home port at the time of the count. After identifying the error in San Diego, the Census Bureau found similar problems in Virginia and the northeast.
