Three sailors injured when a fighter plane exploded into flames on the deck of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis were still being treated for their injuries Thursday at Naval Medical Center San Diego, officials said.
A fourth sailor airlifted to the hospital Wednesday afternoon was treated and released, officials said. The three in the hospital are listed in stable condition with burns.
The mishap occured at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday when a Marine F/A-18C Hornet suffered engine failure and burst into flames as it was waiting to be launched. The injured sailors were working on the flight deck of the carrier, which was on a training mission about 100 miles from San Diego.
