Dan McGeorge Gallery is a new business located at 1340 Orange Avenue. We asked Dan a few questions regarding his Coronado story and his new business:
eC: What is your connection to Coronado? Tell us your Coronado story.
DM: In the 1980’s and 90’s I was stationed at NAS North Island as a photographer in the USNR with the Fleet Audio Visual Command/Combat Camera Group. I developed a love for the Island, and the community, and spent a lot of time here. Many of my images of San Diego were taken from Coronado, and later, when I began teaching photography classes in San Diego my primary field shooting destination with students was Coronado Island.
eC: Why did you choose Coronado and this location on Orange Avenue?
DM: After 10 years of exhibiting all around Southern California I was given the opportunity to share a gallery in Del Mar with another artist. After a year and a half there I began searching for a location to open a gallery of my own. Fond memories I suppose drew me back to Coronado. After many visits to the island it became increasingly evident the atmosphere here, and warm, small-town feel of the village was a perfect match for my vision of a gallery. I also very much appreciated and enjoyed the military presence.
eC: Describe Dan McGeorge Gallery. What services and products will you offer?
DM: The gallery is friendly. My goal is to provide a beautiful setting where families and friends can come to view and purchase beautiful, original photographic art and feel comfortable, relaxed, and at home. All of the artwork is part of an extensive signed, numbered, limited edition series from across the United States. There is a wide range of availability as well, with something for everyone. From inexpensive notecards with matching envelopes to huge framed exhibition pieces, visitors can find wonderful original art to decorate homes and offices, or simple, elegant, unique gifts and souvenirs.
The gallery is also home to the new Coronado School of Photography. Here lessons are given in small classes for all levels of photography, from the very beginning level to the most advanced. Also private lessons are available for individuals and very small groups.
eC: What is unique about your business?
DM: There are several unique aspects about the gallery. It is the primary home of a locally based San Diego artist, and most of the images are exclusive to this gallery. Also the artist is readily available to consult with clients personally, give unique insights into the work, and help with purchase, placement, and customization for individual needs in home or office. Along with a wide range of images from across the United States are also original pieces featuring Coronado. The artist is the teacher. The school aspect provides a unique opportunity to learn from someone who not only is an excellent experienced teacher, but also a proven professional in the field of photographic art.
eC: When you aren’t running the business, how do you enjoy your time away from the gallery?
DM: These days there is not a lot of time away from the gallery. Spending time with family and friends is most enjoyable.
