Oradea, Romania – August 1 – The USA Men’s National Team claimed fourth place at the FINA World Cup following a 12-8 loss to Spain on the final day of play. Jeff Powers (San Luis Obispo, CA/Newport WPF) scored two goals for Team USA as they conclude their major competition for 2010.
Spain controlled the action early getting out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Tommy Corcoran (Coronado, CA/Olympic Club) got on the board for the United States to make it 3-1 going to the second. In the second period Spain went up again by three goals at 4-1 before the United States started to battle back. Team USA closed to within a goal at 5-4 at the 3:13 mark thanks to a score from Jesse Smith (Coronado, CA/NYAC). Spain would add one last goal in the period to lead 6-4 at halftime.
