Coronado Art Walk Expands to Two Days: September 18 & 19, 2010

Coronado, CA –On Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., over 75 artists from around the country will be at the Coronado Ferry Landing displaying works ranging from painting and photography to pottery, wood, glass and jewelry. Admission is free. Musical entertainment, interactive art activities and free shuttle bus to other Coronado sites will be available both days. Over 10,000 people are expected to attend this year. The Coronado Art Walk, now in its fifth year, is a major fundraiser for the Coronado Historical Association.

Stelios Paraskevas, a talented East Coast jewelry and wearable art designer whose work was featured in the May issue of “O,” The Oprah Magazine, is participating in the Coronado Art Walk for the first time, bringing many of his most intricate pieces fashioned from copper wire. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City have both commissioned some of his hand-made designs which are plated with 24k gold and pewter.

“Organic Art” will also be on display. Larisa Thaney creates compositions with real dried leaves, flowers, plants and tree bark, after carefully preserving the natural colors and shapes of the materials. Much of her award-winning work is done in her Ventura County studio, using a magnifying glass and tweezers to glue the organic materials in place.

The distinctive pottery styling of popular local craftsman and Coronado High art teacher, Eric Rempe, will again be available for visitors to enjoy and purchase. He has been working in clay for more than 20 years, incorporating forms and images from the natural world. He teaches ceramics full-time at Coronado High School and is a member of the San Diego Potters’ Guild.

Orange County photographer Bill Johnson, is returning with his stunning seascapes and other artistic nature images at Coronado Art Walk 2010. His photographs are often shot in isolated places revealing unusual views of rocky ridgelines, ocean waves pounding steep cliffs, and desert sands and rocks.

Jim Nix is a retired federal firefighter from North Island NAS and a California landscape artist whose paintings capture the natural beauty of the region, from the ever-changing shoreline to the immutable hills and trails of the backcountry. This is the fourth year his popular works will be featured at the Coronado Art Walk.

The Coronado Ferry Landing on San Diego Bay is a picture-perfect setting for the two-day art and music celebration. The Rad Hatter and other interactive art stations will please the little ones. The unique setting provides a variety of dining opportunities with good choices for every appetite and budget.

Visitors will find ample parking available but for anyone wishing to forgo their cars for the day, San Diego Harbor Excursion will be ferrying pedestrians and bicyclists across the bay from two locations hourly: the Broadway Pier at the Embarcadero and the Fifth Avenue Landing near the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel (fees apply). A free shuttle bus will take visitors down Orange Avenue to other shopping and dining spots, the beach or the Hotel Del Coronado for additional sight-seeing.

The Unified Port of San Diego is a major underwriter of Coronado Art Walk 2010. Other sponsors are providing the interactive art activities, music and transportation. All proceeds benefit the Coronado Historical Association, which operates the Coronado Museum of History and Art and the Coronado Visitor Center.
