One team’s bridge plan is most enlightening

In my personally biased view of the race to light the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, it’s no contest.

California wins. France and the U.K. lose.

Turn out — or in this case, turn on — the lights.

Granted, I’m playing art oracle here. The judges won’t rule until August. Until then, they’re supposed to ruminate, meditate, debate.

The Port of San Diego, in partnership with Caltrans, wants to preserve the appearance of judicious deliberation before raising the arms of the design team that will spend 4 million or 5 million privately raised dollars to artistically illuminate the “iconic” (will somebody please ban that word?) bridge.

In the meantime, the port says it wants San Diegans to go to portofsandiego.com, take the measure of the proposals and weigh in.

By all means do. Click on the three videos. They’re all cool. The French team lit up the Eiffel Tower as well as the Acropolis. Impressive.

But I’d bet my car the vast majority of San Diegans, as well as the port and Caltrans, are going to be swept away by the ephemeral light of the wind.

Count it.

California wins. In a blowout.
