TEE OFF FOR ART!
Help fund the construction of two original mosaic murals to be permanently on display at the city golf course
On Saturday, April 3, 2010 with a shotgun start at 12:30, the Coronado Municipal Golf Course will host a golf tournament, open to the public. The tournament will present the public with the opportunity to assist in raising funds to support the commission of two original art pieces, which will be permanently mounted at the golf course.
Businesses are welcome to enter teams or sponsor holes, foursomes, singles and even dinner for four.
The Four-Man Scramble tournament includes lunch, prime rib dinner, raffle and prizes, for $150 per player. Non-golfers are invited to sponsor a group or come for dinner for $50 per person. Participants may enter in teams of four or get paired in a group. Prizes will be awarded for low gross and net (Peoria), Closest to the Pin and others.
The public may sign up at the golf course. Donations are also accepted and appreciated.
“This is a great project.,” said Roger Miller, Director of Golf Course Operations. “We have thousands of non-golfers using this facility every year and everyone who visits this facility will be proud of this creative addition.”
This project began with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Coronado Golf Course. On October 13, 2007, the City of Coronado held an anniversary celebration golf tournament. The event raised a surplus of funds, which the City Council set aside in a reserve to be applied toward a public art project at the Golf Course.
On April 21, 2009 the City Council authorized the Public Art Subcommittee to pursue two mosaic tile murals to be permanently displayed on the entry walls to the golf course clubhouse.
Kirstin Green, a graduate of Coronado High School, through a competitive submission process, was selected as the artist of choice to design, construct and install the two permanent mosaic murals. The Coronado Public Art Subcommittee conducted the proposal process.
Kirstin’s work may be viewed in Spreckles Park, at the new Community Center pool and at the high school.
The entire project is supported by public money. All proceeds from the tournament will be used to finish this project. “I’m so excited about this project,” said Tony Falletta of Falletta Construction, Inc. “that I will donate time and materials to prep the walls and install the two murals.”
