Harris beats Duncan in six-hole playoff to win City of Coronado Amateur Championship

BY ELI MILLER / Southland Golf Published: December, 2009 San Diego’s Jimmy Harris defeated Patrick Duncan Jr. of Rancho Santa Fe on the sixth sudden-death hole at Coronado Golf Course to win the City of Coronado Amateur Championship on Sunday, November 29. Harris is the first repeat champion in the 51-year history of the tournament. He forced extra holes by shooting a 4-under-par 68 in Sunday’s second round of the 36-hole event, tying Duncan (71-71) for the lead at 2-under 142. Harris had shot 74 in Saturday’s first round, struggling like many players as conditions were made difficult by rain and high winds. The playoff began on the par-4 first hole and then alternated between the par-5 second and par-4 third holes. The decisive blow came the third time the duo played No. 2, as Harris made eagle to win. A former member of the University of San Diego men’s golf team, Harris claimed a $750 prize, while Duncan collected $600. Ryan Indovina, Bucky Coe and Thomas Chu finished in a three-way tie for third, posting 1-under-par 143. For complete scores, visit the Coronado Golf Course website.
