SoCAL BOYS: CIF-SDS Semis: Coronado Tops Rancho Bernardo 13-6 Senior attackman Bobby Braun registered a game-high four points on three goals and one assist to lead No. 2 Coronado to a decisive, 13-6 victory over Rancho Bernardo in a CIF-San Diego Section semifinal Thursday night. Junior attackman Eddie Vita added three goals, sophomore attackman Kyle Runyon had three points on a goal and two assists and senior middie Sean O’Brien scored twice to help the top-seeded Islanders (20-2) advance to the CIF-San Diego Section championship game for the second straight season. Coronado will next face No. 7 La Costa Canyon, the tournament’s second seed, at 5 p.m., PDT, Saturday at Helix Charter. It will be a rematch of last year’s title game, which La Costa Canyon won, 15-5. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting in 2009, Coronado beat La Costa Canyon, 7-5, on March 25. More… SoCAL GIRLS: CIF-SDS Semis: Torrey Pines Upsets Coronado 9-8 Senior middie Becky Trees registered a co-game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead Torrey Pines to a 9-8 upset victory over No. 11 Coronado in a CIF-San Diego Section semifinal Thursday afternoon. Sophomore middie Katie Trees added three goals to help Torrey Pines (17-6) advance to its first San Diego Section championship game since 2003. The Falcons, who have never won a CIF title, will next face No. 9 La Costa Canyon on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., PDT, at Helix Charter. In the teams’ most recent regular season meeting, Torrey Pines beat La Costa Canyon, 11-10, on May 18, ending the Mavericks’ 45-game winning streak against San Diego Section competition.
