Lifeguard-service building blends in

CORONADO — Coronado officials first proposed a new lifeguard-service building about five years ago, angering nearby residents who feared that it would block their ocean views. But after construction of a smaller version was finished April 1, Coronado lifeguard Capt. Sean Carey said he isn’t hearing complaints. “The only peep I hear is that people walk by and they want a tour,” he said. “They like it.” The 2,574-square-foot building, which cost about $1.1 million, is just north of the central beach restrooms and below rocks that run along Ocean Boulevard. Its tan rock walls blend in with the beach, and rounded corners soften its profile. The structure’s height was reduced to 11 feet 9 inches at its highest point to preserve the beach views from nearby homes. Read the entire Union Tribune article here.
