Union-Tribune Editorial Monroe’s the one Experience counts in Coronado council race 2:00 a.m. May 9, 2009 Each of the three candidates in the May 19 election for the Coronado City Council seat vacated when Casey Tanaka became mayor last fall appreciates the city’s character. From there, Barbara Denny, Jerry Mitchell and Phil Monroe diverge. To address traffic concerns, Denny, an environmental attorney, prefers a park-and-ride system to a costly tunnel. Mitchell, a career Marine and successful businessman, wants to finish the tunnel study so residents know all possibilities and their costs. Retired Navy captain Monroe wants both a completed study and serious consideration of overpass/underpass relief for the worst traffic. Denny opposes a toll on the Coronado-San Diego bridge unless the state runs out of money to repair it.
