Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Senior Activity Center: A total of 17 prequalified bidders are holding plans and specifications for construction of the Senior Activity Center. The City is preparing to open bids on Tuesday, November 17. The new 9,000-square-foot building will replace the existing structure with offices, multi-purpose room, activity room, kitchen, club room, lounge, patio, and porch spaces. A contract may be awarded at either the December 1 or 15 City Council meeting. A groundbreaking for the much-anticipated project is set for January 12, 2016, at 2:30 p.m.
SDG&E Planned Power Outage: Yesterday, October 22, San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) notified the City of a planned power outage in the Coronado Cays set to take place on Friday, October 30, beginning at 8 a.m. for approximately eight hours. The purpose of this outage is to replace a transformer, switches, and fuse cabinets in the area. SDG&E did caution that this outage is weather permitting and barring any other unforeseen circumstances.
El Niño Preparation: The City of Coronado has created a web page for residents who want to be kept up to date this coming storm season, which is predicted to be stronger than normal. The page explains what is expected with an El Niño. It will be updated often with information that residents and businesses need before any forecasted storms hit and as they are occurring. To find the page, visit City’s website and click on the El Niño button on the lower right of the home page. The page also contains information on what the City is doing to address flood preparedness, its notification process, flood response, floodwater removal and a contingency strategy. El Niño is a tropical weather pattern that occurs roughly once every three to seven years. It is characterized by the above-average warming of the surface temperature of the waters in the eastern portion of the Pacific Ocean that results in extreme weather, such as drought or flooding.
Central Beach Restroom: Demolition of the damaged portions of the restroom has been completed and reframing has begun. New roofing will be installed and the interior will be refinished with epoxy wall and floor coatings. Temporary restrooms have been moved on site while the facility is closed for repairs.
Spreckels Park Playground: Work has resumed on the installation of a new rubberized playground surface. Work was delayed due to weather and to determine what modifications were necessary to the existing playground structures to be compatible with the new surface. Some of the existing equipment has to be modified to raise it above the new surface. The previous surface material was contoured to fit the equipment but the rubberized material cannot be contoured.
Third, Fourth, and I Avenue Storm Drain: A 30-day public comment period on the Mitigated Negative Declaration and Initial Study opened on Wednesday, October 21, for the Third, Fourth and I Avenue Storm Drain project. The project proposes to install new storm drain inlets at the intersection of I Avenue and Fourth Street, a new storm drain pipe along I Avenue, running from Fourth Street north to San Diego Bay, and upsize the existing storm water outfall at the north end of I Avenue. The Mitigated Negative Declaration, Initial Study, and supporting documents may be reviewed at the Engineering Department in City Hall, at the Coronado Library, or on the City’s website under the Community Development Department’s “Current Projects” webpage. The public comment period will be open until November 19. Comments may be submitted to the Engineering Department, to the attention of Jim Newton, Principal Engineer, at 1825 Strand Way or [email protected].
