Islanders earn an improbable championship

Coronado sophomore pitcher Jake Meloche wasn’t deterred by a five-run deficit early in the Division IV championship game.

Nor were his Islanders teammates on a seventh-seeded squad not even expected to reach the finals.

Meloche allowed no hits over the final five innings against top-seeded Madison at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday as the Islanders rallied to prevail 7-6 with key hitting from two players not active on the varsity until late in the season.

“I was nervous in the first inning, but then I just decided to have fun,” said Meloche, a left-hander who allowed six runs on eight hits. “We weren’t expected to win this game, so we came out and had a great time.”

The Islanders scored the winning run on a one-out single in the sixth inning by senior Jack Nicholson, who was sidelined until the last game of the regular season by a broken foot suffered in a scrimmage.
