Coronado schools offer support to military families

CORONADO — Military families face unique challenges at home and in the classroom, and enlisted parents gathered last week at Village Elementary School in Coronado learn about support available in the community.

Some 30 people attended the event — the second held by the Coronado Unified School District.

“We all know predeployment is hard. There is so much to say, do, prepare for. It is in no way the same as a business trip. Wills, funeral plans, financial decisions must be in place prior to departure. It is extremely stressful,” said Amy Steward, a Village Elementary teacher, wife of a deployed serviceman and daughter of a Vietnam War veteran. “We are raising the awareness of teachers to understand the stress and strain of children in the deployed military.”
