The most valuable insight for any writer to have is one thing: experience. It’s important to be able to convey the thoughts and emotions of yourself as well as others without only ever writing on the pages of a diary. Writing for eCoronado.com has been exactly that practice for me. I wrote countless stories for this website, but the background to them was what truly mattered: the interviews I conducted, the people I met through them, the words they said and I wrote, the policemen I worked with, the crimes I wrote about, and the films I reviewed gave me different opinions, facilitated new interests, and instilled in me a love for the community of Coronado, one I hope to come back to for many years.
eCoronado.com is a well-oiled machine because of its dedicated and amazing founder, Steve Johnson. I have never met someone so enamored with their craft and so enthusiastic to share about their community with other members of it. Steve is also one of the few adults I know that has 100% faith in the youth of today; he hires numerous interns without a single worry, and makes them feel at home right away. He also makes sure that we high school interns can write firstly about what we are most passionate about, and secondly about things that take us out of our comfort zones.
Writing has always been my haven, where I can express my innermost thoughts or describe others who I sometimes can’t by simply speaking about them. eCoronado.com was the first stop on a (hopefully) very long journey of writing careers, but it was an extremely important one. It gave me faith in myself, appreciation for what goes into running a successful and rapid news site, and an even bigger gratitude for the power of words. Though I already knew I loved writing, eCoronado.com and Steve solidified the choice of career path for me. With an impending move to New York in August, unfortunately my time as an intern has come to an end, while my time as a writer has just begun. I’ll be majoring in English with a minor in Government and Politics at St. John’s University in Queens, and eventually hope to pursue law school. My school happens to be twenty minutes from New York, NY, where Rolling Stone magazine rests its headquarters. As a short-term goal, I hope to ceaselessly send writing samples, or even make cups of coffee for the staff until they have no choice but to offer an internship.
I am eternally grateful to Steve and thankful for the opportunity at eCoronado.com, and I recommend the position of staff intern to any of the younger students at Coronado High School. This website has behind it the most passionate staff, and truly is the source for Coronado news, which will always be unbiased, honest, emotional, researched, and real for its readers. It certainly accomplishes its goal: to show that Coronado is a community ripe with opportunity, business, clubs, thoughtful but sometimes hidden people, talented students, and of course, tourists. And with an ever-growing lot of members, it’s clear that the neighborhood, and even people outside it, believe in eCoronado.com as much as Steve and the staff believe in the community.
