Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Traffic and Signal Updates

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Traffic Calming Project Open House

The City of Coronado will host the final public meeting for the Third and Fourth Streets Traffic Calming project on Monday, November 10. The meeting will be held in an open house format and City staff and the consultant team will be on hand from 5-8 p.m. to discuss the recommended traffic calming plan. The public is invited to come by any time during the three-hour window to review maps, talk to the project team, and provide input. A brief presentation will be made to provide an overview of the project history and highlight the results of the survey conducted in August. The public is encouraged to attend to provide feedback. Strand Traffic Update

The California Department of Transportation has lengthened the timing of the green signal for State Route 75 by 20 seconds, which should improve the northbound traffic flow near Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The City has noticed an increase in traffic on the state route in recent weeks. Caltrans will continue to monitor this area for traffic flow and make adjustments as necessary.

Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Tenth Street Reconfiguration

The contractor has been on site this week installing new detection loops in the pavement in preparation for new dedicated left turn lanes. Crews worked Wednesday night, October 29, to erect the new signal poles. Next week, the contractor will return to complete the new signal phasing with protected left-turning movements on Tenth Street. The contractor also will paint left-turn lanes and replace sidewalk concrete that was removed to install the signal equipment.

Best Beach Award

San Diego CityBeat newspaper has released the results of its annual reader’s poll that took place throughout September and into October. Readers chose Coronado Beach as San Diego County’s best. An announcement was made in the October 22 edition of CityBeat. A plaque will be delivered to the City next week.

Coronado Animal Care Facility

The official transition of the day-to-day operations of the Coronado Animal Care Facility from the City to PAWS of Coronado becomes effective tomorrow. PAWS of Coronado has agreed to manage the facility under a multi-year service agreement approved by the City Council in September. PAWS will operate and administer the facility but the City will retain the costs and the responsibility of animal control and enforcement operations. The Police Department formerly coordinated management of the facility. Following a ceremonial key transition, PAWS officials will host a public open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the facility, 1395 First Street. The phone number to the facility, (619) 522-7371, will not change as a result of this transition.

San Diego Bay Marine Debris Study

The Navy is participating in a marine debris study, which is taking place in the entire San Diego Bay at sites that are on Navy land. The study includes people in the Educational Ecological Preserve, on the beach and bay side near the U.S. Naval Radio Station in Silver Strand Training Complex South, picking up items such as trash and debris during a marine debris sampling. A small group of up to five people will be in the area on Friday, November 7, as part of a pre-storm sampling. It is anticipated that the Navy will do this again in January as part of a post-storm sampling.

Election Information

The November 4 General Election is next week. The City of Coronado has updated the election section of its website with current election-related information. The Election Information link is located at the bottom right hand section of the City’s homepage. Two of the links included in the Election Information that are particularly helpful are the San Diego County Registrar’s website and a Public Notice from the County of San Diego. The first is a direct link to the Registrar of Voters’ website, which will allow citizens to find their polling location, check their registration status, check their mail ballot status, as well as other election information. The second link provides information concerning in-office voting and mail ballots.
