Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Coronado Cays Gets New Bicycle Parking
Additional bicycle parking was installed near the Coronado Cays school bus stop last week to provide more spaces for school children to park their bikes. Several mothers contacted City staff to let them know that the existing bike rack at this location was overflowing and children were having a hard time finding a place to safely lock their bikes. The City was able to reuse a bike corral that was in storage. The new corral can be seen in the Coronado Cays Park parking lot across from the Fire Station. The corral was installed on Wednesday, January 7, and the next day it was already being well used with far fewer bikes parked to street trees and poles in the vicinity. For questions about the new corral, please contact Mariah VanZerr, the City’s Active Transportation Planner, at (619) 522-2423.
EV Charging Stations
The City is beginning work this week to add electric vehicle charging sites at the Coronado Golf Course and the Coronado Cays Homeowners Association facility. In September, the City Council approved additional charging stations at these two sites. Work on both projects will be completed simultaneously, with site layout and digging to start this week. The stations should be completed within six weeks. The Golf Course location will be outfitted to house up to five charging stations, but only three will be installed at this time. The demand has not yet driven the need for more stations. As the need increases, however, there will be capacity to add more at minimal cost. Coronado installed four electric vehicle chargers at two locations in 2012. Two went in at City Hall and two at Bradley Field. The City hopes to encourage the use of electric vehicles whenever possible by demonstrating the viability of owning or driving one.
Three on Thursday’ Arts Reminder
The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission has implemented a fun way to let the community know what is going on in the local arts community with “Three on Thursday,” an email reminder of three interesting and noteworthy events in Coronado. This week’s reads: “It is Thursday, January 15th – time to start planning your weekend and beyond! Be sure to check out these three featured events happening in Coronado this week as well as movies and show times at the Vintage Village Theatre.” It featured an upcoming Coronado School of the Arts Musical Revue held yesterday; a Coronado Acoustic Jam session to be held on the third Monday of every month; and “From Raw to Awe,” a live precious metal artist demonstration tonight. To receive the Three on Thursday emails, visit CoronadoARTS.com and sign up for Art in Your Inbox, a monthly listing of local events.
Stay Informed, Sign Up for Nixle
Coronado has partnered with Nixle to implement a Community Notification System that allows residents to receive news on local emergency situations, such as traffic accidents and bridge backups, in real-time. As a resident, there are several simple ways to register: 1) Text your ZIP CODE to 888777 from your mobile phone, or, 2) Go to www.nixle.com and sign up. Residents may customize their Nixle settings by going to www.nixle.com and creating a User Profile. The City has two Nixle accounts. You can receive relevant community advisories, such as upcoming meetings and notice of weekly newsletters, by signing up for the City of Coronado’s Nixle account. The Police Department’s Nixle account contains traffic incidents and back-ups. You may have seen the Police Department’s Nixle alerts, which are linked to the City of Coronado Police Department’s Facebook Page and to the City’s Twitter account. The alerts have been mostly used for traffic incidents but may also be used for actual emergencies, such as a city- or countywide power outage. You choose the information you want, for the addresses you want, all delivered at no cost, by text message, email and web.
Coronado Gateway Project
The City has initiated a project to transform the state Route 75 toll booth plaza into the Coronado Gateway. The goal is to create a community vision for a gateway that represents the beauty, history and character of Coronado. Come to the first public workshop to learn about design treatments and provide input on what values and components are most important to you and your community. Two Arrested for Bike Theft
On Saturday, January 10, the Police Department’s remotely monitored bike was stolen from the business district on Orange Avenue. The Communications Center was alerted just after 3:30 p.m. and patrol officers traced the bike to a vehicle traveling outbound on the bridge. Officers conducted a traffic stop on state Route 163. Two people were arrested on charges of grand theft, conspiracy and possession of narcotics for sale, and jailed. The Police Department encourages the community to report bike thefts by calling the non-emergency line at (619) 522-7350 or by visiting the Department at 700 Orange Ave. Bikes can be registered on-line by visiting the Police Department web site or by bringing your bicycle to the police station.
