Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Morning news show to film from Coronado Beach Thursday

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Transportation Commission Special Meeting

The Coronado Transportation Commission held a special meeting Thursday afternoon to allow a public discussion of a consultant’s traffic study. About 35 community members attended the meeting, where consultants Fehr & Peers made a presentation about the Third and Fourth Streets Study and took questions from the audience. The Commissioners discussed the report and the consultant’s recommendations to calm vehicle speeds, reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility. The study will be brought back to the Commission at a future meeting with recommendations on the next steps in the process. The study was commissioned by the Coronado Transportation Commission after hearing concerns expressed by the community about the speed of vehicles, difficulties crossing state Route 75 at Third and Fourth streets, along with concerns for pedestrian and bicycle crossings. The traffic impacts on the Third and Fourth Street Corridor impact all other Coronado roads.

EV Charging Stations

Work on one of the City’s new electric vehicle charging station sites is nearly complete and a second site currently under construction should be wrapping up soon. The Coronado Cays Homeowners Association site is nearly ready for vehicle charging. Once the electricity is connected, the charging sites will go on line. Work on the charging station at the Coronado Golf Course is underway. The City Council approved additional charging stations at these two sites in September. The Golf Course will be outfitted to house up to five charging stations, but only three will be installed at this time. Coronado installed four electric vehicle chargers at two locations in 2012. Two went in at City Hall and two at Bradley Field.

Cays Berm Stabilization

Construction was completed this week on the Cays Berm Stabilization Project, which included placing a total of 225 tons, or 450,000 pounds, of sand in the Coronado Cays waterways to stabilize the bulkhead in various locations. When there is insufficient sand in front of the bulkhead, it can cause the bulkhead to swing out from below. With a large amount of sand now surrounding the Cays’ bulkhead, it is much more stable. This week, the contractor placed approximately 97.5 tons of sand along the water side of the seawall at Catspaw Cape, Antigua Court and Sandpiper Strand to complete the project.

Live TV Beach Segment

Fox5 San Diego’s Morning News show is set to film live from Coronado beach on Thursday, February 19. The community can expect to see equipment and crews setting up the show and filming live. They plan to do a segment on the beach and interview beach crews.

Tennis Center Update

The Tennis Center is offering a “Sweet Deal” for the ball machine, which began on Sunday, February 1, and runs through this Sunday, February 15. The deal gives you 16 hours of the ball machine for the price of 10. Pay $100 for a 16-punch card. Once purchased, there is no expiration date on this deal. The junior tennis program, for ages 4-17, begins its new session next Wednesday, February 18. Those classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Middle School Tennis Program begins Tuesday, February 17. This year, there will be approximately 60 kids participating. Tennis Pro Bryan Conway is the director of the Middle School Tennis program. Pickleball is now being played at the Cays on Fridays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Four nets will be setup on tennis court No. 5 and the cost is $2 per player. All are welcome to check it out.
