Coronado High School’s class of 1965 will celebrate its 50th reunion from June 7 through 10. The class of 1965 was the fiftieth class to graduate from Coronado High School (CHS) and will celebrate its fiftieth reunion concurrently with the graduation of the 100th class from CHS.
Planned events include an informal gathering in Spreckels Park on Sunday, June 7. The class will gather at 4PM to enjoy the third Concert-in-the-Park of the season, featuring the Dave Matthews Tribute Band, Stepping Feet. On Tuesday, June 9 a dinner dance will be held at the Golf Course. On Wednesday afternoon the class will tour the new high school. That evening they will be honored at the graduation of the 100th class from CHS, after which they will wrap up the reunion on the patio at McPs.
The class is presenting the high school with two $1,200 scholarships. One scholarship each for a male and a female student will be awarded to students who have financial need, will attend a four-year college, have a demonstrated record of community service, have a strong academic record, and preferably are the children of a currently serving member of the armed forces.
The scholarships are titled the “Fiftieth Class Reunion Scholarships from the CHS Class of 1965.” Class member Carol Lemai said that, “It is the hope of the class that subsequent classes will follow our lead and endow similar scholarships in conjunction with their fiftieth reunions.” The two scholarships will be awarded to the selected students at the CHS Award Ceremony on June 8.
So far over 85 members of the class of 1965 are planning to attend the reunion. Many are local residents who have remained in Coronado or have returned to it. Others will be coming from as far away as Massachusetts.
A DVD of the events is planned and a “memory” book will be prepared. It will provide biographies of the class members that will capture the highlights of their lives since graduation. It will also acknowledge the members of the class who, unfortunately, are deceased.
While the committee responsible for planning the reunion has made a substantial effort to locate and contact as many of their classmates as possible, there are still many members of the class for whom they have no contact information. If you are a member of the CHS class of 1965 and have not been contacted, or know someone who is a member of the class, please email the committee at [email protected]. There is still time to sign up for the reunion and reconnect with your classmates.
