This past week, the Associated Student Body (ASB) of Coronado High School (CHS) worked tirelessly to organize the homecoming festivities. First on their list was the Homecoming Pep Rally held in the CHS gym on Friday, October 12. After the Homecoming court was chosen earlier in the month, each of the candidates created and rehearsed skits with their peers to perform at the pep rally.
After the last bell dismissed the students on Friday, they joined their classmates on Tenth and Ynez to get ready to walk in the parade along Orange Avenue. Over the past month, each class had been working innovatively on constructing their homecoming floats to put on display for the entire community. This year, the theme of the floats was Children’s Books. Each class creatively designed their floats to fit this theme.
In the evening, students, parents, alumni and many from the community gathered at Niedermeyer Field for the Homecoming football game against San Diego High School. This year’s varsity football team walked onto the field with six wins so far this season to one loss. Going up against this tough team, San Diego took an early lead in the game. One of the highlights from the Islanders was Nicholas Dunn’s receiving pass that scored Coronado their only touchdown of the game. “Proud of our young men who fought against a better team, and never quit,” comments Coach Kurt Hines. “That being said, we have a lot to work on.”
As many saw on Friday night, lightning lit up the sky and rain began to pour on the field towards the end of the second quarter, with less than three minutes on the clock. After attempting a 20 minute rain delay, the game was canceled due to weather. This dramatically changed the homecoming halftime show plans.
Everyone on the field moved into the CHS gym to finish the homecoming festivities and to announce the Homecoming King and Queen. The floats, normally displayed around the track during the halftime show, were not taken into the gym, although it was announced that the winning float was the Class of 2019’s re-creation of the Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz.

After introductions, Cole Harrison and Sasha Hofisi were crowned 2018 Homecoming King and Queen, as voted by the entire CHS body. It was an Islander day to remember!
