Earlier this week, the Girls’ Islander Golf team played three back-to-back matches, resulting in a win and two losses. On Tuesday, the Islanders played their first league match against OLP at home. Every stroke counted in this very close match, and Coronado led by a two-point margin at the final putt. Crista Izuzquiza shot one under par (35 strokes) and was named Medalist of the Match. Sabrina Ladd and Samantha Lorr both shot under 50, with respective scores of 45 and 47. Team captain Caroline Ward shot 50 strokes, followed by Annie Holland (51) and Madeline Deitrick (57). The final score tallied up to 228-230.
The following day, Coronado traveled to Fairbanks Ranch Country Club to play against Torrey Pines. Known to be a tough course, the Islanders were not able to shoot under par, and Torrey Pines took the win, 246-209. Izuzquiza, however, was named Medalist, with a score of 38 strokes, followed by Ward and Ladd, who both shot 49.
Thursday’s match concluded the week for the golf team, as they played at home against Point Loma High School. Although they were not able shoot for a second win, “it was a better performance from some of the girls with our lowest score of the season to date,” comments Coach Stuart Gordon. Along with two other golfers from Point Loma, Izuzquiza shot her lowest score of the season—34 strokes. Both Ladd and Lorr played an excellent game, with scores of 43 and 45, respectively. Point Loma led 225-206 by the end of the nine holes.
The girls’ current record is eight wins to three losses.
