Golf: CHS Girls Take Five Wins with Five Players

Back on the golf course, the Girls’ Varsity team started their season after a restful summer. As many were not available to play before school was back in session, only five players golfed in these earlier nine-hole matches. The first against Otay Ranch High School (on Wednesday, August 15) finished in a forfeit on behalf of the opposing team, while the Islanders shot a total of 249 strokes. Sophomore Samantha Lorr was named Medalist of the Match with a score of 46 strokes, having the lowest score of both teams.

The following day, Coronado had a closer match against Morse High School away. With strong driving and precise putting, Lorr shot the fewest strokes, finishing with a score of 39. The Islanders won by a margin of four points, as the final score was 224-228.

As the Islanders entered the second week of their season, they had three matches ahead of them. On Monday, August 18, Patrick Henry High School came down to play Coronado on their home course. Lorr again continued to dominate, having the lowest score with 44 strokes, and collectively, the team dominated 235-337. On Tuesday, they hosted El Capitan High School, who also could not best the Islanders on their own course. Senior Sabrina Ladd was named the Medalist, with her score of 41 strokes, while Coronado once again dominated 226-273.

The Thursday that school was back in session, the Islanders played against San Diego High School at Balboa Golf Course. This proved another easy match for Coronado, with a final score of 253-273.

“A great start to the season with only five players, but now the tougher matches begin,” says Coach Stuart Gordon. “As school has now begun, we have returning player Crista Izuzquiza (junior), who reached the regionals of the CIF tournament last year. We will be working hard at improving our chipping and putting for these to win matches.” Also returning to the squad this year are seniors Caroline Ward, Sydney Zoehrer, and sophomore Madeline Deitrick. New this year is freshman Sydney Stewart, forming a squad of eight solid players.

Congratulations to the Islanders on their five-win streak.

Upcoming Match:  Thursday, August 30 vs. Poway High School at Coronado Municipal Golf Course @ 4:00 PM
