On Saturday, May 19th, five of Coronado High School’s own received accolades from the Media Arts Center San Diego’s iVIE Awards & Student Film Festival. The iVIE Awards & Student Film Festival received over 350 submissions from high schools throughout San Diego County. CHS juniors Slater Aiello, Grant Gustin, Nathan Goff, Zack Martin and senior Ivan Velasco were nominated for their videography, “Support” at the Lincoln High School Performing Arts Center within the category of cross-curriculum. They won best in category in a field of five nominees.
As the Media Arts website describes, the Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Awards “started in 2001 to encourage and reward teachers who utilize video as a project-based learning tool in their classrooms. iVIE has grown into a major student video competition attracting hundreds of students each year from around the county. Through iVIE, hundreds of students each year use film and visual literacy to demonstrate their understanding of classroom concepts.”
The students’ short film grew out of their Digital Arts (DigArts) course within the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) program. The short film, “Support,”
is a thriller-based film centered on a troubled young teen, played by Grant Gustin, that is working through his internal struggles through an unwitting support group. The film, directed by Slater, written by Nathan, with photography by Ivan, and edited by Zack, takes the viewer through a suspenseful trip that can only be summed up as a nail biter! These young men faced stiff competition within their category but in the end they came out on top. The Coronado High School students received a Sony Video Camera as well as deserved recognition for their hard work, which was truly an honor.
