USS Midway Flyby Planned: As part of a USS Midway event, three Navy F/A-18s will conduct a flyby of the aircraft carrier in San Diego at an altitude of 1,000 feet at about 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, June 2. The route will take the aircraft near the Naval Amphibious Base, into the San Diego Bay, over the Midway, then out San Diego Bay. See map below. For noise concerns or comments about the event, please contact the Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards District Office at (858) 502-9882.

Lock Vehicles and Take ValuablesSummer is near and now is a good time to remind residents of the need to take actions to stop enticing thieves looking to steal items from your car and ruin your day. Coronado Police recommend that when leaving your vehicle parked, whether at home or out in the community, don’t leave items of value in plain view and ensure you lock your car, even when you will only be away for a brief time. If you don’t take it, they will.

Coronado Earns Spot on Top 10 Beach List:  Coronado has once again made Dr. Beach’s list of the best beaches in the country for 2018. The list is put together by coastal expert and Florida International University professor Stephen P. Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach. He uses 50 physical factors to make his decision, including beach width and condition, sand softness, water temperature and number of sunny days. Said Dr. Beach: “Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. With its lush subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf.”

Beach Security: In preparation for the busy summer ahead and in its ongoing commitment to maintaining the City’s public beach, the City has once again contracted with a security firm to begin daily fire ring patrols. The City reminds the community and visitors that burning wood from pallets is prohibited at the beach. City staff including beach lifeguards and police department personnel also patrol the beaches as part of their general duties. When they witness beachgoers with pallets or engaging in other violations of beach rules, they approach and educate to correct future behaviors. Signs at the main entrances to the fire ring area inform the public of the rules. Security guards patrol the fire ring area in the evenings between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This has proved successful in preventing violations at the fire rings by more quickly addressing those violating the City’s beach rules.
